The Petivity Smart Feeder for Cats is worth a closer look if you want meal tracking, but the important claim to check is not just the price. It uses a camera and AI recognition to identify which cat ate, while Petivity says the feeder does not prevent food stealing and works only with dry kibble. Before you buy it for a multi-cat home, verify the app requirements, return window, backup batteries, privacy comfort level and whether the current checkout deal still applies.
Why Cat Owners Are Looking At It Now
Petivity, powered by Purina, introduced the Smart Feeder for Cats in late September and promoted it with an October 6 New York event that let visitors remotely feed shelter cats. The product is being positioned as more than a timer feeder: it tracks meals, uses a built-in camera for cat recognition and pairs with the Petivity app so owners can see who ate, when they ate and how much was consumed.
That is a useful promise for households where one cat grazes, another steals food or a pet sitter needs a clearer schedule. It is also exactly the kind of pet-tech purchase that can disappoint shoppers if they treat the launch headline as the whole checklist. A feeder can be convenient without being the right feeder for every cat, every phone or every return situation.

The Claim To Check Before Checkout
The strongest shopper claim is that Petivity says the Smart Feeder for Cats has no required subscription for enhanced feeder features, including livestream video and eating insights. That can make the device easier to compare against smart feeders and cameras that depend on a monthly plan. Still, no-subscription does not mean no conditions.
Petivity says setup and management require the Petivity app, with iPhone iOS 15 or newer, or Android 11 or newer. The support page also says service is available in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. If you are buying for a second home, a relative outside that service area or an older phone, that compatibility detail matters more than the sale badge.
The product page also says the feeder tracks meals for up to five cats, identifies cats by facial recognition and monitors trends. But it does not stop one cat from eating another cat’s meal. If your main problem is food guarding or stealing, a microchip feeder or separate feeding space may still be the better shopping lane.
Buying Checklist For A Multi-Cat Home
- Food type: Petivity lists dry kibble only, with a 5 to 15 mm kibble size. Do not buy it for wet food or mixed-food feeding.
- Stealing risk: It can tell you who ate, but it does not physically block the wrong cat from eating.
- Phone and region: Confirm iOS, Android and service-area requirements before ordering.
- Backup power: The product page lists backup battery support, but the D-cell batteries are not included.
- Replacement parts: Check the cost and availability of freshness packets and extra bowls. One freshness packet is included, and the product page says it lasts 2 to 4 weeks.
- Placement: Plan for a hard, flat surface within Wi-Fi range. Avoid tight corners if the camera needs a clear view of each cat.
Deal And Coupon Checks
Petivity’s product page showed a limited-time sitewide promotion when checked, but the cart terms matter. The page says the promo is valid only for orders shipped within the continental U.S., applies only to in-stock merchandise while supplies last, cannot be combined with another promotion or coupon code and excludes taxes. That means a discount can be real and still fail to apply to your exact cart.
Before paying, compare the final cart total with the same item at Amazon, Chewy and Petivity. Do not compare only the item price. Include shipping, taxes, return route, warranty support, whether the seller is authorized and whether any bundled accessories are actually useful for your home.
If you buy through a third-party retailer, save the order confirmation. Petivity’s return policy says smart devices can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase, and proof can include a receipt, invoice, order confirmation page, order details page or order emails. The policy also says an RMA must be requested from support within 90 days.
What To Avoid
Do not buy any smart feeder as a replacement for veterinary advice. Eating changes can be useful information, but an app chart is not a diagnosis. If your cat is losing weight, avoiding food, vomiting, not drinking normally or acting unwell, call your vet instead of trying to solve the problem with a device purchase.
Also avoid buying only because the product uses AI. The practical questions are simpler: will your cat eat from it, will your phone run the app, will your Wi-Fi reach the feeding area, can you return it if your cat refuses it and are you comfortable with a camera beside the food bowl? If any answer is no, the smarter deal may be a simpler timed feeder, a microchip feeder or a separate feeding station.
Quick Answers
Does the Petivity Smart Feeder require a subscription?
Petivity says no subscription is required for the Smart Feeder for Cats’ enhanced features, including livestream video and eating insights. Check the product page again before checkout because app features and regional terms can change.
Can it stop one cat from eating another cat’s food?
No. Petivity says it can track the behavior and show who ate, but it does not prevent food stealing. That distinction is critical in multi-cat homes.
Is it for wet food?
No. The product page says it is for dry kibble, with kibble sized 5 to 15 mm.
What should I check before buying it on sale?
Check the final cart price, seller, return path, app compatibility, service area, backup batteries, accessory costs and whether the feeder solves your actual feeding problem.
