#Petco pickup
The Petco pickup deal can disappear when the item you want is not actually eligible for in-store or curbside pickup at your chosen store. The discount is tied to the pickup portion of the cart, not every product you see on Petco.com, so one shipped item, excluded brand or Autoship selection can change the math before you pay. Treat the cart summary as the real offer, not the banner at the top of the page.
This matters right now because Petco is promoting pickup and curbside savings while summer shoppers are also buying heavy, urgent and temperature-sensitive supplies, from food and litter to flea products, cooling gear and travel items. Pickup can be a useful deal if the store has what you need and you can collect it quickly. It is less useful if you build a mixed cart and only notice the discount changed after you have already compared prices.
Why the pickup discount is not the whole cart
Petco’s own pickup terms say the shopper must choose the “I’ll Pick It Up” option, select a store and add the item to the cart for the pickup discount to apply. The same terms say that if the pickup option is not available, the product is not available in stores for that purchase path.
The important detail is the subtotal. Petco says the discount applies to the online purchase subtotal for pickup in-store products only, before taxes and shipping. Petco also says Autoship orders, one-time delivery orders and shipped items do not qualify for the pickup promotion. That means a food bag picked up locally may count, while a toy shipped from a warehouse may not.

The mistake to catch before checkout
The easiest mistake is assuming every item in a $50 or $60 cart helps unlock the pickup deal. Check the cart line by line. If one item says ship to home, delivery, Autoship or unavailable for pickup, it may sit outside the pickup subtotal even though it still appears in the same order.
That can matter most with bulky pet basics. Cat litter, dog food, training pads, flea and tick products and replacement filters are the kinds of items shoppers add quickly to reach a threshold. Some may be excluded, out of stock locally, prescription-only, delivery-only or cheaper only through a different fulfillment method. Do not count the savings until the cart shows the promotion in the order summary.
A practical Petco pickup checklist
- Choose the store first, then add items, because availability can change by location.
- Look for “I’ll Pick It Up” on every item you expect to count toward the promotion.
- Separate pickup items from shipped or delivery items if the cart summary becomes confusing.
- Check whether the discount is based on $50+, $60+ or another live threshold shown in Petco’s current terms.
- Watch for a max discount, exclusions and non-combinable offers before comparing against Chewy, PetSmart, Amazon or Walmart.
- Take a screenshot of the cart if the pickup deal is the reason you are choosing that retailer.
When pickup is still a smart deal
Pickup can beat shipping when the item is heavy, needed today or easy to inspect before you leave the parking lot. A litter box, dog bed, leash, crate pad or bag of regular food is often a cleaner pickup purchase than a fragile, temperature-sensitive or prescription-adjacent item that requires extra handling. It can also help you avoid shipping minimums if your local store has the exact size, flavor and count you already use.
For summer orders, pickup has another advantage: you control when the product comes inside. Do not leave pet food, treats, supplements, flea products or soft chews in a hot car while running other errands. If the order includes anything that could be affected by heat, collect it last and bring it indoors promptly.
What to avoid
Avoid switching an item to Autoship just to chase a different headline discount unless you actually want repeat orders. Petco’s app terms describe separate Autoship rules, including a first-order discount, maximum discount language and exclusions. That is a different deal structure from pickup, so compare the final first order and the next routine order, not only the first banner.
Also avoid buying a new food, litter or supplement in the largest size only because pickup makes the cart total look better. If your pet may reject it, start smaller unless the return policy makes sense for the product. Petco’s return page says online orders returned to a local store can receive a refund within 30 days of shipment, while returns from 31 to 60 days are handled as merchandise credit. It also lists restrictions, including prescription medicine and pharmacy products.
Deal and coupon checks before paying
Do not stack assumptions. A pickup discount, a sitewide code, brand sale, loyalty price, shipping offer and Autoship discount may not all combine. Petco’s pickup terms include exclusions and say promotion codes may not be combinable with other offers or online promotion codes. The final order summary is the only number that matters.
If a competitor is cheaper, compare the same fulfillment method and the same product size. A pickup-only Petco price is not the same thing as a shipped marketplace price from an unknown seller. For food, flea and tick items, grooming tools and pet tech accessories, the seller, return route and replacement timing can be worth more than a small cart discount.
Fast answers
Does every Petco item count toward pickup savings?
No. Petco says the pickup discount applies to pickup in-store products only, and shipped items do not qualify for the promotion.
Do I need a promo code for the pickup offer?
Petco’s pickup terms say no promo code is needed for the pickup promotion described on its pickup page. The discount should appear automatically in the qualifying cart subtotal.
Is pickup better than Autoship?
It depends on the product. Pickup is useful for urgent local stock and heavy supplies. Autoship can be useful for repeat basics, but you need to compare the first-order discount, later-order discount, exclusions, shipping rules and cancellation settings.
